This year’s national theme for Black History Month (BHM) marks a meaningful milestone: 30 Years of Black History Month — Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations: From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.
The theme commemorates three decades of Black History Month in Canada by recognizing the lasting impact and contributions of Black Canadians, past, present, and future.
💡 Did you know?
- 📊 According to the 2021 Census, approximately 1.5 million people in Canada—about 4% of the population—identify as Black.
- 🌎 The Black community in Canada is richly diverse, encompassing more than 300 ethnic and cultural backgrounds and over 450 mother tongues.
- 📊 In Hamilton, 17.1% of recent immigrants (arriving between 2016–2021) identify as Black, while 9.6% of the city’s immigrant population overall is Black.

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program |
|
|
 |
As many of you know, the 2025 tax season is fast approaching!
In light of this, I’m please to announce that the Hamilton Public Library—in partnership with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program—are once again hosting tax clinics at select library branches throughout the city! These tax clinics are meant for individuals and families with a modest income. Due to considerable challenges with both funding and with securing volunteers, HPL are only able to offer drop-in tax clinics this year. These tax clinics are all going to take place on Saturdays between March 7 and May 2. These clinics are all FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED and there will be NO APPOINTMENTS.
There are a total of 8 tax clinics scheduled between March 4th and May 3rd. All information about our tax clinics can be accessed through this link: https://hpl.ca/free-tax-service
We’ve also prepared an FAQ page: https://www.hpl.ca/articles/tax-clinic-frequently-asked-questions; and a checklist of what to bring to the appointment: https://www.hpl.ca/articles/tax-return-checklist.

Online applications still have a place, but many job seekers rely on them almost exclusively. Enter frustration and exit momentum – these clients just can’t seem to get traction. A growing number of employers are posting roles on company websites rather than large job boards, or they’re filling positions through referrals and internal networks before roles are widely advertised.

Whether you’re working with a high school student considering a hands-on career, or a mature client exploring a shift into the trades, providing clear information can support better decision-making on whether to venture into the skilled trades.
