Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month 2025!

Did you know? In 1978, the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) started the movement for February to be officially recognized as Black History Month. It all began with a petition to the City of Toronto, which led to the first-ever Canadian proclamation in 1979. In 1995, the House of Commons followed suit, thanks to the leadership of Dr. Jean Augustine.

This year, the theme is “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,” honoring Lincoln Alexander, Canada's first Black Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister.

In Hamilton, we proudly celebrate the contributions of the Black community, who make up 5.1% of the city’s population (28,415 people). This month, let’s reflect on their legacy and the rich cultural diversity they’ve shaped in our community.
