New Report Launch: HALF WAY THROUGH 2024

From 1896 to 2021, the number of medals won by Canada for the Summer Olympics totalled 326, with 71 gold medals, 110 silver medals, and 145 bronze medals.

Based on medal count, Canada ranked 15th. Canada ranked 22nd for the most Gold medals won in the Summer Olympics, just below Poland with 72, and above Norway with 71.

The Civic Holiday is celebrated on the first Monday of August and it's a public holiday in some provinces and territories. 

 

The Civic Holiday is commonly referred to as the August long weekend.

 

The holiday is celebrated as Heritage Day in Alberta, Natal Day in Nova Scotia, in commemoration of the founding of the Halifax–Dartmouth area; and as Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, in honour of the Manitoba-born athlete.

 

The date is also celebrated as several municipal holidays in Ontario, such as Simcoe Day in TorontoJohn Galt Day in Guelph, and Colonel By Day in Ottawa

A Hamiltonian has won an Olympic Medal!

Eleanor Harvey from Hamilton, ON has become Canada’s first ever Olympic medalist in fencing.

The 29-year-old won the bronze medal in the women’s individual foil event on Day 2 of Paris 2024, defeating Italy’s Alice Volpi 15-12 in the third-place match. Volpi is the fourth-ranked women’s foil fencer in the world, while Harvey came into the Games ranked 14th.
HIPC's latest report reveals that many recent immigrants to Hamilton are younger adults. It’s great to see so many young newcomers making Hamilton their home!
